Hold On
Hebrews 10:26-39
Two things to consider before
- A Solemn
- A Beautiful
Share with your group three sports– two sports you have participated in and one you have not. See if the group can guess which one you have not participated in.
Hebrews 10:26-31 contains a serious warning about deliberately continuing in sin after receiving knowledge of the truth. How would you explain the difference between stumbling occasionally in sin versus the deliberate rejection of faith that this passage warns against? What makes this distinction important for believers to understand?
The sermon identified three tragic actions of those who abandon faith: rejecting God’s truth, spurning God’s Son, and despising God’s Spirit. Which of these resonates most deeply with you, and why? How might these three actions manifest subtly in the lives of believers today before becoming full-blown rejection? How can we guard against gradual drift in these areas?
What does it mean when the author says, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God”? How should this statement shape our understanding of both God’s love and His holiness? How can we maintain a healthy reverence for God without falling into unhealthy fear?
Read Hebrews 10:32-39. The author encourages believers to “recall the former days” of their faith journey, including times of suffering and public reproach. Share a significant moment from your faith journey that helped establish your spiritual foundation. How does remembering this experience help you during times of doubt or spiritual fatigue?
The early Christians “joyfully accepted the plundering of [their] property” because they knew they had “a better possession and an abiding one.” What possessions or securities are most difficult for you to hold loosely? How does the promise of eternal treasure change your perspective on material loss?
What does it mean to “throw away your confidence”? The sermon mentioned several pressures that might cause someone to consider abandoning their faith: relentless pace of life, entertainment distractions, unanswered prayers, painful circumstances, and spiritual fatigue. Which of these pressures do you find most challenging in your own spiritual journey right now? What practical steps might help address this specific pressure?
The passage emphasizes our “need of endurance” to receive what is promised. What practical habits or spiritual disciplines have helped you develop endurance in your faith journey? How might we encourage endurance in fellow believers who are growing weary?
The author quotes from Habakkuk about waiting for “the coming one” who “will not delay.” How does maintaining an eternal perspective affect your daily decisions and priorities? What changes when we truly live in light of Christ’s return?
The sermon emphasized that “faith isn’t sustained in isolation.” How has Christian community helped you hold onto faith during difficult seasons? Is there someone in your life right now who needs you to help them “hold on” to their faith?
The sermon emphasized three actions for holding on to faith: draw near to God, hold fast to your confession, and stay engaged with community. Which of these three areas presents the greatest challenge for you personally right now, and what specific step could you take this week to strengthen it?
