Habits of a Healthy Heart - Part Four

THIS WEEK: Habit of a healthy heart - Get Rid of Guilt and Shame

root of Guilt and Shame is SIN

CULTURE REBANDS SIN: This is the work of the enemy

WHAT IS SIN…REALLY?
Hamartia (hbr) Archery—Miss mark.
Circle the “i” in sin

SOFTENING THE BLOW OF SIN DOESN’T TAKE AWAY THE EFFECTS OF IT
Consequences:
all consequences have a reaction: good or bad
SIN= PAIN & HURT and the result is Guilt and Shame

Shame says you won’t change, you can’t change,
Guilt says what is done will never be undone

We were not made to hold onto either

BACK TO EDEN: Made in the image of God: He has no sin
Sin corrupted everything and brought shame
FIG LEAVES - Gen 3:7 - eyes were opened and realized they were naked

SATAN IS THE ACCUSER - Revelation 12:10 -…accuser of brothers and sisters
He does this to:
Get you out of God’s grace
Make you believe all is lost
Put you in bondage

*1 PETER 5 States we need to resist him and if he is the accuser *

I*F SATAN IS THE ACCUSER, THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE CONVICTOR*
John 16:7-8
”But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:“

*WE NEED CONVICTION *
Holy Spirit alarm

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CONVICTION AND CONDEMNATION
Conviction says you can change and Jesus can help change you. It says you can be forgiven, repentance is available, change is an open door.

Condemnation is defined as censure and blame

Condemnation comes straight from hell - it carries the burden of guilt and shame whether we place it on ourselves or each other

Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus

CONVICTION PRODUCES GODLY SORROW
When you override conviction, you allow the enemy to get a foothold in your soul.
It becomes easier and easier for you to override any system processes that got put inside of you.
It becomes easier and easier to justify your sin.

GODLY SORROW IS GOOD BECAUSE IT LEADS TO FREEDOM
2 Corinthians 7:9-10 Yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended …

*Matt 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. *

Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

SPIRITUAL ALGEBRA
Godly Sorrow + Repentance = Salvation.
Worldly Sorrow + Remorse = Spiritual Death

Let’s face the facts:
WE ALL SIN

Romans 3:23 - for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Until you see yourself as a sinner, you won’t see your need for a Savior.

WE NEED A SAVIOR
Jesus is the one who cushions the blow of sin

2 Corinthians 5:20 - God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Jesus came to BE the ministry of reconciliation

WE NEED REPENTANCE
Def: sincere regret or remorse that leads to change

That change is found in Christ and IN CHRIST WE ARE NEW CREATIONS

2 Corinthians 5: 7 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

Remorse is not the same as repentance.

Remorse: Feel bad—What you did.
Repentance: Feel bad—What did—Turn from it.

Rationalizing your sin is the first sign your heart is growing cold
It’s not warmed up by the heat of the Holy Spirit

ROMANS 8:5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

HOW DO YOU FIGHT GUILT AND SHAME?
*CONFESS QUICKLY*
*1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. *

CELEBRATE RECOVERY: CONFESS
Confess our sins to God
Obey God’s direction
No more guilt
Face the truth
Ease the pain
Stop the blame
Start accepting God’s forgiveness

The CON is over when we FESS up
It is only in light of the work of the cross that we can remove our guilt

*JESUS GIVES UP FULL ACCESS TO FREEDOM IN CONFESSION *

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
