BIG IDEA
God continues His massive rescue from corruption and He invites us to join Him.
ICE BREAKER
The book of Judges reveals a downward spiral toward complete corruption. Corruption is the process by which something goes from good to bad. It typically starts with small compromises.
Last week we talked about the example of a small compromise we can make by taking one bite out of the donut. We justify that we are not eating the whole thing. As the day progresses we eat the whole donut. Corruption does not happen overnight nor with one decision. When corruption is complete in our lives we end up defending what is bad. Abortion in our culture is one example of this.
Today we learned that God is trying to rescue us from compromise and corruption.
- Think of your story and think about the ways you have been rescued from compromise and corruption.
- Reflect together on the people God has used to rescue you from compromise and corruption. Group leader tip — consider taking time as a group to thank God together for the vastness of His rescue.
ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- God raises up the “wrong” people in Judges to show us that God is fighting and that He is gaining victory. God is intentionally not using the strength of man. He will invert man’s power and He is inviting our trust through these stories. Share a current situation with the group where you long for God to invert man’s power. It may be a relationship, a health issue or an employment situation.
- Share with the group regarding a situation in your life that you are having a hard time trusting God with. Try to be specific and name the pull of your flesh in the midst of this struggle. Imagine resting in the truth that God is strong, loving, and trustworthy. If you picture yourself resting in these truths what will you be freed to do or not do in your situation?
- God asks us to invert the power of the world by bringing life and restoration. When we do devotions we are subverting the power of the world and our own flesh. When we come together as a church we subvert the power of the world. Share with the group someone you know who is inverting the power of the world through their life(think of some small examples as well as the more obvious larger stories).
- The pull of corruption for the believer is to be asleep at the wheel because we are pursuing our own comfort or we are participating in the corruption. Each time we look at porn or we watch a movie with one or two scenes of sex in it we contribute to corruption. Consider taking some time as a group to pray and ask God to reveal any areas where you are asleep or participating in corruption. Reflect on your marriage or closest relationship and how you have been relating to that person recently. Share with the group an area God has brought to your attention.
- Are you concerned about little compromises in your life? Explain your answer.
NOTES AND QUOTES
