IDENTITY – Week 1: Identity Theft - “Who Told You That?”
Key Scriptures: Genesis 3:1–11, John 8:44, Romans 12:2, Acts 2:38
- If you believe the wrong story about who you are, you’ll live the wrong life. But the truth of God’s Word reveals your real identity.
We live in a confused world.
Our culture says you are what you feel.
Genesis 3:1–11
1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LordGod had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LordGod amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? —Genesis 3:1-11 KJV
But God asks, “Who told you that?”—because not every voice in your life tells the truth.
John 8:44 (NIV) – The devil is the father of lies. Listen how Jesus describes the devil in John 8:44
… He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
🔸TRUTH
Satan’s first attack was on identity. He wants to keep you bound by lies—like “You’re not enough,” “You’ll never change,” or “God can’t use you.”
But God’s Word says:
You are
You are
You are a
🔸REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE
A woman in Texas lost her job and reputation due to identity theft. It took time to recover her name and her life. Many of us are spiritually in that same condition. The enemy has stolen your identity—until you reclaim what’s yours in Christ.

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
🔸NEXT STEP
If you’ve never been baptized in Jesus’ name or filled with the Holy Ghost—start there (Acts 2:38). That’s how you step into your true identity.
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
💬 This Week’s Truth Declaration:
“I am not who the world says I am. I am who God says I am. I am chosen, redeemed, and filled with purpose.”
