Romans 2:5-7
5 Because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life

1] God’s Grace REACHES THE RENEGADE

2 Samuel 9:3-4
3 The king asked, “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?” Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in both feet.” 4 “Where is he?” the king asked. Ziba answered, “He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.”

Ephesians 2:8-9
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it

2] God’s Grace COVERS THE CRIPPLED

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us

2 Samuel 9:7-8
7 “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.” 8 Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?”

1 John 2:1-2
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

3] God’s Grace EMBRACES THE EXILED

Ephesians 2:12-13
12 You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope. 13 But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.

2 Samuel 9:9-10 ; 11b
9 Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s steward, and said to him, “I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family. 10 You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master’s grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.” 11b (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)…. So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons

Colossians 2:13-15
13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. 14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. 15 In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross

LIFE GROUP QUESTIONS

1] The story of Mephibosheth reminds us that our King, Jesus, takes the first step in saving unworthy people. Read Ephesians 2:8-9. Share with the group the encouragement you take from this scripture, and Mephibosheth’s story.

2] Read 2 Samuel 9:7-8. How did Mephibosheth view himself in the eyes of David? Have you ever had to overcome feelings of unworthiness with regards to your salvation? If yes, what encouragement do you find in 1 John 2:1-2?

3] Read 2 Samuel 9:9-10;11b. David not only accepted Mephibosheth, he treated him like a son. Do you have a similar heart for God’s children? Do you accept them, or do you go further and treat people like your own family?

4] Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your mind the name of somebody who is cut off from God and without hope. Together with the group, pray for that person to be encouraged, but also, to find salvation, and a seat at the King’s Table.
