Central Text: Exodus 12 & 13

Dominant Thought:
*We are a delivered people who have a story to tell about the goodness of God.

Great Commission - Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV) “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

We are People.

We are a

people who have a story to tell about the of God.

Why God sent the plagues:
(1) God hears the Cries of His People.

(2) To Display God’s Glory *

  • The Hebrew word for glory is כָּבֵד (kâbêd, kaw-bade´) which means to be heavy, weighty, rich, and honorable.

  • Exodus 5:2,4 “Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.” Exodus 5:4 “But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work.”

  • Exodus 8:1(NIV): ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me.”

  • Exodus 14:17-18 “17 I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory (כָּבֵד) through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory (כָּבֵד) through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”

(3) To Display the distinction between those are in a covenant relationship with God and those who aren’t.

Exodus 1:22 “Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.”

Exodus 11:6-7, “There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again. 7 But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any person or animal.’ Then you will know that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.”

Exodus 12:21–28(NIV):21 Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover lamb. 22 Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin, and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out of the door of your house until morning. 23 When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down. 24 “Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. 25 When you enter the land that the Lord will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26 And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27 then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’ ” Then the people bowed down and worshiped. 28 The Israelites did just what the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron”

**
Tenets of the Passover
(1) Get a year-old male lamb that is
without imperfections.
(Exodus 12:5 (NIV): 5 The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats).

(2)* Slaughter the Lamb* (Exodus 12:6 (NIV): 6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.

(3) Take the blood of the lamb and put on the sides and tops of the door frames (Exodus 12:7 (NIV): Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs.)

(4)* Eat the meat with bitter herbs and bread without yeast* (Exodus 12:8 (NIV): 8 That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast.) Since yeast was often viewed as sinful.

(5) Eat in a hurry (Exodus 12:11 (NIV): This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover)

Exodus 13:14–16 (NIV): 14 “In days to come, when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.’ 16 And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.”

Matthew 26:17 -30,““17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. 20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” 22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?” 23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” 25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?” Jesus answered, “You have said so.” 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” 27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” 30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”

1 Corinthians 11:27-29 “So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.”
