- Read Matthew 5:38-42. What did Jesus mean by “an eye for an eye” and “a tooth for a tooth?” What was the purpose of this law in its original context?? (Exodus 21:22–25; Leviticus 24:17–22; Deuteronomy 19:16–21) Who was responsible for executing and administering this law?
- In verses 39-42, how does Jesus challenge the Pharisees’ application of Moses’ teaching? What is the radical nature of his alternative?
- What does it mean to “turn the other cheek” (v. 39)? Is Jesus advocating for passivity in the face of evil? Why or why not?
- How does this teaching relate to self-defense or protecting others? Can you think of situations where retaliation might be justified? If so, when? How can we reconcile the need for justice with Jesus’ call for non-retaliation?
- How can we apply Jesus’ teaching on non-retaliation in our own lives? What are some practical examples of how we can respond to personal offenses or injustices?
- How does this teaching connect to the broader message of forgiveness in the Sermon on the Mount? (Matthew 5:7) What are the implications of this teaching for our relationships with others and our trust in God? (1 Peter 2:20-23)
- In what ways does this passage challenge our cultural norms and values regarding conflict resolution? How does Jesus’ teaching offer a counter-cultural alternative?
- What role does the Holy Spirit play in enabling us to live out this radical teaching in our lives? How can we seek the Spirit’s guidance and empowerment to respond to conflict in a Christ-like way?
