The Root of All Evil - 1 Tim 6:10
February 11, 2024
what is one thing that affects entire world… but people don’t want pastors talking about… money… after all, money is the root of all evil, right…
1Tim 6:10… “the love of money is the root of all evil… by craving it… some have wandered away from the faith… and pierced themselves with many griefs…”
kakos… not as it ought to be; mode of thinking, feeling, acting; troublesome, destructive…
Rom 5:17… “receive overflow of grace… gift of righteousness… reign in life…”
dikaiosyne… integrity, virtue, purity; correct thinking, feeling, acting…
money is not the issue… the love of money is the problem…
1Tim 6:17-19… “set your hope on God… who richly provides us with all things to enjoy… do what is good… be rich in good works… generous… willing to share…”
after Baptism in the Spirit and Praying in Tongues… figured we needed a less controversial subject to talk about… empower or offend… you choose… pray…
Psa 119:28-30; 165… “my soul is weary… strengthen me with Your word… great peace have those who love Your word… nothing shall offend them…”
Matt 13:21… “has no root… persecuted because of Word… becomes offended…”
how many believe you are rich… and that is one of our issues with money…
2Cor 8:9… “thru grace… He was rich… He became poor… so you might become rich…”
plousios/plouteo… abounding in material resources; abundance of outward possessions…
2Cor 9:8-15… “God will provide all you need… plenty left over to share with others… He will provide and increase your resources to produce great generosity… you will be enriched in every way so you can always be generous… as a result, they will give glory to God…”
God is NOT against money… provides wealth so you can be generous… which points people to Him… important to teach truth about money… last time in 2019…
Rom 10:14-17… “how can they believe without hearing.. faith comes by hearing…”
- Jesus talked more about money than heaven and hell combined.
- One out of every 7 verses in Luke deals with money or finances.
- In the Gospels… one out of 10 verses, or 288 verses, deal directly with money.
- Bible offers 500 verses on prayer… less than 500 on faith… more than 2300 on money.
Sometimes the things you want to hear the least will help you the most. —Andrew Wommack
in last 30 years… counseled hundreds of people about marriage, parenting, grief, depression, health, guidance… any guesses how many came to me about money…
Luke 16:1-14… “he who is faithful in what is least is also faithful in much… he who is dishonest in what is least is also dishonest in much… if you have not been faithful with unrighteous wealth, who will entrust true riches to you… if you have not been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who will give you what is your own… cannot serve both God and money… and Pharisees, who loved their money, heard these things and ridiculed Him…”
NLT… “if you are faithful in little things, you’ll be faithful in large ones…”
NASB… “one who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much…”
TLB… “unless you are honest in small matters, you won’t be honest in large ones…”
how important is this… Jesus says money is the least area of our faith… and if you don’t have faith in the area of money… you won’t have faith for anything else…
If a person gets his attitude toward money straight… it will help straighten out almost every other area of his life. —Billy Graham
biblical truth about money applies to everyone… kids, teens, young adults, singles, couples, seniors, widows, single parents, non-Christians… there is a way that works and a way that doesn’t… way that works is found in the Word…
Deut 8:18… “God gives you power to gain wealth… to confirm His covenant…”
Psa 25:4-5… “show me the right path… point out the road… lead me by truth…”
Isa 30:21… “your ears will hear a voice saying… this is the way, walk in it…”
Isa 55:11… “word that comes from My mouth… prosper in what I send it to do…”
John 14:6… “I am the way… the truth… and the life…”
2Tim 3:16… “all scripture inspired by God… to teach, rebuke, correct, train…”
won’t answer all questions today… like a puzzle… putting together pieces week by week until we see final picture… not just about increasing finances… about a different attitude toward money… just a tool… lousy master, but great servant…
ever heard of LOTR… Denethor was the steward of Gondor… not the King… a steward manages another’s property, finances, or affairs… don’t belong to him…
one of the most important and hardest things to understand about money is that it doesn’t belong to you… it’s all God’s… only a steward… manage it for Him…
Gen 14:19-22… “the most High God… possessor of heaven and earth…”
Exo 19:5… “listen carefully… keep My covenant… the whole earth is Mine…”
Deut 10:14… “the heavens… earth and everything in it… belong to the Lord…”
Psa 50:10-12… “every beast… every bird… world and everything in it is Mine…”
Psa 95:4-5… “depths of the earth are His… mountain peaks are His… sea is His…
Job 41:11… “everything under heaven belongs to Me…”
Haggai 2:8… “the silver is Mine… and the gold is Mine…”
Acts 17:25-28… “He gives life… and all things… in Him we exist…”
Titus 1:7… “overseer, as God’s steward, manages… not greedy for money…”
Because you are stewards… every financial decision you make is spiritual. How you manage finances is a good indicator of your spiritual condition. —Dennis Rainey
pastor, you’re wrong… my house, my possessions, my money… worked hard for all this… it’s mine… my precious… not really… God gave you physical life, wisdom, talents, skills to work hard… He is source of your financial success… knowing and believing that is the very first step to a place of financial freedom… not bondage…
2Cor 3:5… “nothing of value on our own… only success comes from God…”
reach into purse or wallet of person near you… give like you always wanted… easy to be generous with someone else’s money… tighter grip when we think it’s ours… then it becomes master and you become servant… first truth… money is not the root of all evil… knowing it all belongs to God is beginning of freedom… pray…
1Chron 29:10-22… “riches and honor belong to You… we give you thanks… who are we that we should be able to give as generously as this… for everything comes from you… and we have only given You what comes from Your own hand…”
Eccl 5:10… “whoever loves money never has enough… wealth is never satisfied…”
Phil 4:10-20… “no church shared in giving but you… not that I seek the gift, but I seek the profit that is increasing to your account… I am fully supplied… and my God will supply all your needs according to His riches… in Christ Jesus…”
