Message Notes

Luke 18:1-3
“1 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’”

Luke 18:4
“For a while he refused”

Luke 18:4
“but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’”

Luke 18:6-8
“6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?””

Why Should I Be Persistent in Prayer?

Reason #1 - Persistent prayer helps me to keep my focus.

  • On who God is.

Ephesians 3:20-21
“20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. 21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.”

  • On who I am.

John 1:12
“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”

Hebrews 4:16
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Romans 8:15-16
“15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”

  • What’s Important.

Reason #2 - Persistent prayer helps me not to get discouraged and give up.

Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Reason #3 - Persistent prayer helps me to see God’s hand move.

“God never shuts His storehouses until you shut your mouth.” —CH Spurgeon

James 5:16
“The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”

James 5:16
“The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” (NLT)

Reason #4 - Persistent prayer helps me to demonstrate my faith.

Luke 18:8
“I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
