SERMON DISCUSSION GUIDE
CONVERSATION STARTER
Share with the group how you first came to Gateway Church. What made you decide to be a part of our local church body?
DEEPER
Read Romans 12:3-8
Paul warns against thinking too highly of ourselves and calls us to “sober judgment.” This means accurately assessing ourselves in light of God’s truth.
What are some common ways people tend to overestimate themselves in the church?
Conversely, how do some people underestimate their value in the body of Christ?
How can we develop a habit of “sober judgment” in our daily lives?
In what areas of your life do you personally need God’s help escaping the sin of pride or unbiblical humility?
How have you seen pride or unbiblical humility impact your relationship with God and with others — especially with those in the local church?
Paul uses the metaphor of the body to show how we all have different roles but are interconnected.
How does recognizing ourselves as “members of one another” change the way we approach church life?
What are some practical ways to demonstrate that we are truly one body?
What is one thing you can do differently to live as a more active and engaged member of the body of Christ?
Humility and service go hand in hand. Jesus modeled this perfectly in Philippians 2:1-11.
How does Christ’s example of humility challenge the way you think about yourself and your role in the church?
What stood out to you in this week’s sermon? What were your biggest takeaways?
Prayer activity: Divide up into groups of 2-3 and spend time praying for one another, asking God to reveal where he might be calling each person to serve and be actively engaged in the local body of Christ. For those who are already serving in high capacities, pray for renewal, encouragement, and wisdom to serve with joy and balance. Pray that God would give clarity in discovering and using spiritual gifts to build up the church in love. Encourage each member to listen for God’s guidance and commit to taking a step of faith in serving or continuing to serve with a humble heart.
