Sermon: Blessing Through Temptation
Scripture: Genesis 39
Summary: In the process of Joseph being blessed and God blessing those who bless him there is a test. Joseph is going to show us how to respond to sexual temptations that entice you with human wisdom and as result we’ll see the beauty of God’s design for intimacy.
For Reflection and Discussion
Read Scripture: Genesis 39
The 3 points of Peter’s sermon were:
• Our response
• Our reasons for the response
• Our relationship to Jesus
- What was one thing you learnt from the sermon?
- Read Genesis 12:1-3. This is the covenant God made with Abraham. What parts of the covenant can you see playing out in the story of Joseph?
- How does the way Joseph goes about his work tell you about being an employee?
- Joseph is 17 year old during this chapter. What do you remember about being 17? Share what life looked like for you at the time?
- How does the world view sex these days from your observations? Where does this teaching come from? What effects do you see from it in today’s society?
- Tim Keller says, “Sex is God’s way to say to someone else, “I belong completely and exclusively to you in every way of my being – socially, economically, legally, emotionally, spiritually.” Do you agree with this? How have you seen this work in healthy marriages and not work in unhealthy marriages? Feel free to use your own as the examples (if you’re married).
- Have you been or are you now going through any circumstances similar to what Joseph or Jesus endured? In what ways can you identify with them?
- Sex is one of the most powerful aspects of our humanity. Like a fire, if controlled it bring light and warmth. If not, it will burn the house down. How are you being careful to ensure the fire remains in its right place? If you’re not, confession is the first step to health. If someone shares a confession, stop and pray for them. Ask how you can keep them accountable.
- Ultimately, sex is meant to point you to Jesus. We have a desire inside of us that is even greater than sex – connection to Jesus. Take some time to share how your walk with Jesus is going and how you connect with him.
