Luke 22:39-62 - Go to Dark Gethsemane

There are two very critical messages in this text. First, we see what Jesus is accomplishing in this last stage of his ministry: he is saving us by his obedience and suffering. Second, we learn one of the keys to following him faithfully: we need to pray like he prayed.

Rest in the Righteousness of Christ (39-44)

“This Cup”: We are forgiven because of the sufferings of Christ.

“Not My Will, But Yours”: We are accepted because of the sinless
obedience of Christ.

Pray, so that you will not Fall into Temptation (45-62)

Obedient Praying: Submit to the Will of God

Expectant Praying: Trust in the Strength of God

Contrast Christ and the Disciples (47-62)

“Go to dark Gethsemane, you who feel the tempter’s power
Your Redeemer’s conflict see, watch with him one bitter hour
Turn not from his griefs away, learn of Jesus Christ to pray”
