READ AGAIN: Luke 8:16-21

  1. Jesus changes illustrations quickly from a farm to a dimly lit room. He is still talking about the Gospel and how we respond to it. (v. 16) Can you think of any other illustrations that you’ve heard for the Good News?
  2. Why is it helpful to understand the Gospel as a light?
  3. Jesus is also referred to as the light numerous times in Scripture. How do you understand this idea that Jesus is the Light? Talk about anything of interest.
  4. What the Gospel and Jesus will ultimately do is illuminate everything. One day nothing will be hidden or concealed from the piercing light of Christ. This is both wonderful and terrifying. Discuss the beauty and the terror in verse 17.
  5. Jesus says in verse 18 that “whoever has will be given more” but “whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.” What do you think that He is referring to specifically?
  6. Why do people love the darkness? (cf. Jn 3:19-21)
  7. Jesus’ family showed up to “collect Him, saying that He lost His mind.” (cf. Mk. 3:20-12) How could Jesus’ own family think this?
  8. What does Jesus’ statement say about being a part of the family of God? (v. 21)
  9. If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child, and having God as his Father.- J.I. Packer. What do you make of the thought of being God’s child and having Him as your Father?
  10. How do you need to make some adjustments to be a better lampstand this week?
