“Let not your hearts be troubled.” —John 14:1
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” —John 14:16-17
Who is the Holy Spirit?
“If everything in life emanates from the knowledge of God, then it’s safe to say that everything in the Christian life emanates from the knowledge of the Holy Spirit.” —Tony Evans
He is a real person.
He is God.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” —Matthew 28:19
- He is unique.
“In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,” —Ephesians 1:13
Why did Jesus promise to send a Holy Spirit to us?
- To point us to Jesus.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” —John 16:13-14
- To be a helper.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,” —John 14:16
“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.” —John 16:7
How Does The Holy Spirit Help Us?
The Spirit:
- Regenerates us (John 3:6-7)
- Convicts us of sin (John 16:8)
- Empowers us with gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4-7)
- Testifies in our hearts that we are God’s children (Ephesians 1:3, Galatians 4:6)
- Leads us (Galatians 5:18, 25)
- Makes us fruitful (Galatians 5:22-23)
- Grants us and matures us in resurrection life (Romans 8:11)
- Enables to kill sin (Romans 8:13)
- Intercedes for us when we don’t know what to pray (Romans 8:26-27)
- Transforms us into the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18)
- He helps us to remember the things of God.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” —John 14:26
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” —John 14:15
- He gives us the peace of God.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” —John 14:27
- He guides us.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth” —John 16:13
- He empowers us to live victoriously over sin.
- He gives us hope.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” —Acts 1:8
