PentecostALL Part 7 - More Than You All

I wish you

spoke with tongues. —1 Corinthians 14:5
I speak with tongues more than you . —1 Corinthians 14:18

1) There are supernatural benefits to praying in the Spirit.

  • Praying in the Holy Spirit builds up your .

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. —Jude 20, NKJV
But you, dear friends, carefully build yourselves up in this most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit, staying right at the center of God’s love. —Jude 20, The Message

  • Praying in the Holy Spirit gives you

to a place of communion and fellowship with the the Holy Spirit.

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. —1 Corinthians 14:2

  • Praying in the Holy Spirit teaches you to

    with the Holy Spirit.

I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. —1 Corinthians 14:15

2) There a between the personal expression of tongues & the expression of tongues that is intended for the church.

  • The of tongues refers to the prayer language received with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
  • The of tongues, or tongues as a gift of the Holy Spirit refers to a message that, with the gift of interpretation, builds up the church.

a. The sign is the

speaking to God. The gift is speaking to the church.

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to

, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. —1 Corinthians 14:2
For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be . —1 Corinthians 14:5 - NLT

b. With the sign we see believers all speaking in tongues at the

time (Acts 2, 10, & 19). With the gift, it should be at a time, followed by interpretation (See 1 Cor. 14:27).

c. The sign of tongues / prayer language doesn’t need

, the Gift of Tongues needs to be bundled with the Gift of Interpretation.

d. The sign of tongues/prayer language

the individual. The Gift of Tongues with interpretation edifies the church.

4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who
prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification. —1 Corinthians 14:4-5

3) We need to steward our own spiritual growth while simultaneously the spiritual growth of others.

  • We see two values – valuing our spiritual growth, and valuing the growth of – in 1 Corinthians 14:18-19.

18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;  19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words
with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue. —1 Corinthians 14
Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know. —Jeremiah 33:3

  • a Spirit-filled life is continually strengthened, and is also a continual strength to others.
