How Do I Respond to God?

Matthew 20
29 As Jesus and the disciples left the town of Jericho, a large crowd followed behind. 30 Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
31 “Be quiet!” the crowd yelled at them.
But they only shouted louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
32 When Jesus heard them, he stopped and called, “What do you want me to do for you?”
33 “Lord,” they said, “we want to see!”
34 Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed him.
- The blind men weren’t just calling out to ‘anyone’.
- The expression, the title ‘Lord, Son of David’ is a believing appeal to the Messiah.
- Son of David is a messianic title, matched here with “Lord”.
- These men had not SEEN any proof of Jesus being Messiah.
- But ‘faith comes by hearing and hearing through the word of the Lord (Romans 10.17).
- They had heard enough to know that Jesus is the Son of David AND Lord.
Matthew 5.3
“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him,
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.”How does God bless us?
- Well, when I realize my need for him, he meets my need and gives me … more of Him.
Matthew 21
28 “But what do you think about this? A man with two sons told the older boy, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’
29 The son answered, ‘No, I won’t go,’ but later he changed his mind and went anyway.
30 Then the father told the other son, ‘You go,’ and he said, ‘Yes, sir, I will.’ But he didn’t go.
31 “Which of the two obeyed his father?”
They replied, “The first.”
Then Jesus explained his meaning: “I tell you the truth, corrupt tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the Kingdom of God before you do.
32 For John the Baptist came and showed you the right way to live, but you didn’t believe him, while tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even when you saw this happening, you refused to believe him and repent of your sins.
- Jesus WILL NOT move on to another topic with these hypocrites (or with me!) because of his great love and because He is Truth.
- This is what they need to know and repent.
- God’s love is so great, His word is so perfect, and the Holy Spirit is so persistent and he will never stop talking to you about your need to repent from sin.
- Jesus is always telling you He loves you, even when you hate the words he uses to prove his love for you!
Matthew 22
Jesus also told them other parables. He said, 2 “The Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a king who prepared a great wedding feast for his son.
3 When the banquet was ready, he sent his servants to notify those who were invited.
But they all refused to come!
4 “So he sent other servants to tell them, ‘The feast has been prepared. The bulls and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the banquet!’
5 But the guests he had invited ignored them and went their own way, one to his farm, another to his business.
6 Others seized his messengers and insulted them and killed them.
7 “The king was furious, and he sent out his army to destroy the murderers and burn their town.
8 And he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, and the guests I invited aren’t worthy of the honor.
9 Now go out to the street corners and invite everyone you see.’
10 So the servants brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike, and the banquet hall was filled with guests.
11 “But when the king came in to meet the guests, he noticed a man who wasn’t wearing the proper clothes for a wedding.
12 ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how is it that you are here without wedding clothes?’ But the man had no reply.
13 Then the king said to his aides, ‘Bind his hands and feet and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
- Guzik says ‘this parable demonstrates / represents that those indifferent to the Gospel, those antagonistic toward the Gospel, and those unchanged by the Gospel share the same fate.”
- None of these will enjoy the presence of the King at His feast.
- Can we be dispassionate about God, who says we must come to him by faith?
Ephesians 2
Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins.
2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.
3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.
4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)
6 For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.
7 So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.
James 4
4 You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.
5 Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him.
6 And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say,
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.
9 Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy.
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
