SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

WARM UP: Share about a time when you experienced a foreign culture. What cultural practices seemed strange to you? [Today we see Paul’s teachings about household roles. These teachings may sound strange to us, but they also sounded strange to the Colossians 2000 years ago.]

HEAD: These questions help us examine the Word.
1. Read Colossians 3:18-4:1. Why does this sound strange to us today? Why would it have sounded strange to the Colossians?
2. Read Colossians 3:11 & Galatians 3:28. What do these verses tell us about God’s vision for humanity?
3. Why didn’t Paul try harder to bring about societal change?
4. Paul uses the phrase “as is fitting in the Lord.” How does this phrase modify the picture of absolute submission that was common in that culture?
5. How does the truth of God as the ultimate authority restrain the powerful and protect the vulnerable?

HEART: These questions help us wrestle with what we believe.
6. When the Bible doesn’t line up with our cultural expectations, how do you react? Explain.
7. What are some ways that you as a parent might be making it hard for your children to obey?
8. How would the way you view your work change if you saw yourself as working for the Lord and not for people?

HAND: These questions help us bring truth and beliefs into our everyday life.
9. How is the Holy Spirit leading you to live differently?
