MAN’S PROBLEM
How God could be just in justifying sinful, undeserving people
…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… —Romans 3:23
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way… —Isaiah 53:6
The wages of this sin is death… —Romans 6:23
GOD’S CHARACTER
Absolute righteousness demands absolute justice.
- Sovereign
- Omniscient
- Omnipotent
- Omnipresent
- Love
- Just
- Righteous
…to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. —Romans 3:26
FAITH’S SOLUTION
The one thing a human can do and still do nothing: Receive the work of another.
Read about the work of Christ foretold in the Ark of the Covenant in Exodus 25:10-22, Leviticus 16, and Hebrews 9.
…Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. —Romans 3:25
Propitiation – The act of satisfying God’s justice and righteousness
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through Me.” —John 14:6
Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law. —Romans 3:27,28
LAW’S PURPOSE
- Show us what sin is.
- Make us sin more.
- Drive us to despair.
- Bring us to Christ.
…by the works of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, through the law comes the knowledge of sin. The law came in that the transgression might increase, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more. —Romans 3:20; 5:20

Discussion Questions
1. Read 1 Peter 1:17-21. Why does Peter contrast Jesus’ blood with “corruptible things”? Why mention that Jesus’ sacrifice was ordained before the world’s creation?
2. Psalm 85:10 says, “Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed.” Why are mercy and truth, righteousness and peace, incompatible and unattainable apart from Jesus?
3. What is your reaction to the idea that Jesus is God’s mercy seat? What relationship do you see between this and the throne of judgment?
