Message Notes

“Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. waiting for the moving of the water; for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred the water: whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had one man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, ‘Do you want to be healed?’ The sick man answered him, ‘Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Get up, take up your bed, and walk.’ And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.” —John 5:2-9

Question: Do you want to be healed?

If you want to get well, two things must change.

  • Your level of WANT

“Want – ‘the sanctified desire and matching discipline to do what needs to be done, no matter how hard it is or how long it takes.’” —Mark Batterson

“You can’t expect God to do the supernatural if aren’t even willing to do the natural.” —Mark Batterson

  • Your assumptions about God

God won’t answer 100% of the prayers you don’t pray.

“For nothing will be impossible with God.” —Luke 1:37

“But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’” —Matthew 19:26

“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” —Ephesians 3:20

God is able!

“Most miracles are the by-product of ‘a long obedience in the same direction.’” —Eugene Peterson

Where do we need healing?

  • Spiritual health

Do not sacrifice the spiritual!

  • Physical health

  • Emotional health

  • Financial health

Beware of opposition:

  • Disbelief

“The father instantly cried out, ‘I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!’” —Mark 9:24

  • Setbacks

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” —John 10:10

Healing begins and continues with the Gospel.

  • Repentance
  • Prayer and Meditation

“Meditation is to let - ‘the word of Christ dwell in you richly’” —Colossians 3:16

“I took my troubles to the Lord; I cried out to Him, and He answered my prayer.” —Psalm 120:1

  • Faith
  • Obedience

God is able!

One meeting with Jesus still has the power to change a life forever.

“Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” —James 5:13-15
