A Mom and a Miracle
Motherhood - Perhaps no role in life is so aligned with the heart and nature and example of Christ: selfless, sacrificial, servanthood.
Psalms 139:13 NIV
13 For you created my inmost being;you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Jeremiah 1:5 NLT
5 “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apartand appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”
Luke 1:17 NIV
17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
John 2:1-5 ESV
1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
John 2:6-11 ESV
6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
Ephesians 6:1-3 NIV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
Proverbs 1:8-9 NLT
8 My child, listen when your father corrects you.Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. 9 What you learn from them will crown you with graceand be a chain of honor around your neck.
Proverbs 6:20 NIV
20 My son, keep your father’s commandand do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
Luke 2:51-52 NIV
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
Changing Water Into Wine: This miracle involved Jesus creating something that normally takes months or years.
One Word from God. One moment with God. One touch from God can shift things, transform things, heal things, forgive things beyond what any process of the world could ever do.
Verse 5: “Do whatever He tells you”
Mary didn’t argue or fuss or complain. She just said “listen and obey.” Some of us - our breakthrough is tied to the same thing. We might not like what God initially says. It may conflict with our preference or opinion. The breakthrough, the provision, the miracle, is on the other side of “listen and obey”
From religion to relationship. Pots previously used for methodical ceremony were now going to be filled with miraculous provision. Wine represents JOY.
Scoop and pour
Being a mom is constantly drawing from and pouring out your resources.God has a way of calling us to assignments that cause us to desperately depend upon him.
You can’t give away what you don’t have.
“Fill them to the brim”
John 4:13-14 NIV
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
I Kings 19:4-8 NKJV
4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!” 5 Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8 So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God.
I Kings 19:9-12 NKJV
9 And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 So he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.” 11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
The Enemy’s Strategy to Take Us Out
2 Samuel 17:1-2 ESV “1Moreover, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David tonight. 2 I will come upon him while he is weary and discouraged and throw him into a panic, and all the people who are with him will flee. I will strike down only the king,…”
You can afford to be discouraged, but you can’t afford stay discouraged. You will inevitably feel alone, but you are NOT alone!
1 Peter 5:10 NLT
10 In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.
Hebrews 13:20-21 NLT
20 Now may the God of peace—who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood— 21 may he equip you with all you needfor doing his will.May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him.All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.
Matthew 11:28-30 MSG
28 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” 29 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” 30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Hebrews 4:11 KJV
11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
