JEHOVAH - SHAMMAH - THE LORD WHO IS THERE

Ezek 48:35 (KJV)
It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there.

1. The Occasion and Meaning

  • The phrase “The LORD is there” is the name Jehovah Shammah.
  • The last words of the Book of Ezekiel are words of hope for a very distraught nation.

  • Ezekiel began prophesying

the destruction of Jerusalem. He foresaw the glory of God departing - His abiding presence.

  • The people sinned. Israel and Judah went into captivity and the Temple was destroyed. The Temple was the symbol of God’s abiding presence.
  • God chastened the people for the sake of His name. He would restore the people for the sake of His name.
  • Ezekiel prophesied that Israel would get a new heart and spirit, and ultimately God would regather Israel and rebuild the Temple (Millennial Temple) and His presence would abide there.
  • This was a great ray of hope to a people that believed all hope was lost.

Hemphill
At the time of Ezekiel’s prophecy, the temple lay in ruins. Israel was despondent and discouraged. It may have seemed to many that God had removed his presence. Into this hopeless situation the prophecy of Ezekiel must have seemed like a ray of light and hope. He declares that there will be a new temple built and the name will be Jehovah Shammah, “the LORD is there.”
The name Jehovah Shammah is a reminder in our darkest hour that God is with us. When you are feeling abandoned and hopeless, address Him as Jehovah Shammah.

2. God’s Presence - The Incarnation

  • What does the New Testament reveal concerning the fulfillment of the promise implicit in the name Jehovah Shammah?
  • The New Testament begins with the birth of Jesus, which is the fulfillment of Isa. 7:14. (cf: Mat. 1:23)
  • Jesus is the fulfillment of Jehovah Shammah.
  • In Jesus Christ, man comes to know and experience the presence of a Holy God. (cf: Col. 1:19)
  • Jesus Christ embodies the presence of God the Father. When we see Jesus, we see the Father. He and the Father are one. He is Jehovah Shammah.

3. God’s Presence - In Us

  • Some people follow the natural progression and understand that Jesus is Jehovah Shammah, but fail to see this next truth.
  • If God’s presence was seen in the spectacular revelations of the Old Testament such as the burning bush and the pillar of fire, and then His presence was manifest in Jesus, where would one find the manifestation of his presence today?
  • The clear answer of Scripture is that God wants to manifest His presence in the world through His .

John 17:18 (KJV)
As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

John 1:14 (KJV)
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

  • Jesus tabernacled the glory of God. (cf: John 1:14)

John 17:22 (KJV)
And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

  • God’s glory, His powerful presence, is now to be manifest in us, His followers. The church was prepared by God to reveal a mystery. (Col. 1:27)

  • The

presence of Christ manifest in us through the Holy Spirit is what enables us to reveal God’s presence today.

  • What an incredible truth! God wants to indwell His people in such a way that Jehovah Shammah would be seen in us. (1 Cor. 3:16)
  • We are His temple, and His presence is in us. This truth should impact the way we live our lives. If the world is to see the presence of God, it will be in us.

4. God’s Presence - The Eternal Dwelling

  • God will dwell among His people for all eternity.

John 14:3 (KJV)
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Rev 21:1-3 (KJV)
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

  • The Temple that Ezekiel saw in His visions was actually the Millennial Temple. But the ultimate temple (dwelling place) is a temple not constructed by hands, but the temple which is the of God Himself. .
  • What truth and comfort. God will dwell with us for all eternity. God “is there” now and forever. And because He IS there, He will be with us forever.
