Sermon Notes:
Why me Lord?
What have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I’ve known?
Tell me, Lord
What did I ever do
That was worth lovin’ you
Or the kindness you’ve shown?
Lord help me Jesus,
I’ve wasted it so help me Jesus,
I know what I am,
But now that I know,
that I needed You so help me Jesus,
My souls in your hand —“Why Me,” song by Kris Kristofferson
18 - This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together—she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.
19 - Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 - But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 - She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”
22 - All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
24 - When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
25 - But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name ‘Jesus.’ —Matthew 1:18-25
Why did God pick Joseph? The answer is in verse 19 where it says that Joseph was, “faithful to the law…a just man…a righteous man…noble.”
We see this in Joseph’s:
1.) WORK
“God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and tend it.” —Genesis 2:15
“Six days shall you work.” —Exodus 20:19
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, knowing that it’s for the Lord that you work, since you will receive an inheritance from the Lord and a reward.” —Colossians 3:23
2.)
COMMITMENT
3.) SEXUAL PURITY
4.)
“Because Joseph was a good man, a righteous man, and did not want to expose Mary to public disgrace, he had in mind to break off the engagement.” —Matthew 1:19
5.) COMMITMENT TO
AND
GOD
“An angel appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son, and you are to name Him Jesus because He will save people from their sin.” —Matthew 1:20-21
6.) FULLY-ENGAGED
“And Jesus grew up. He grew up in wisdom and in stature. He grew up and He had favor with God and man.” —Luke 2:52
“For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.” —2 Chronicles 16:19
Try me, Lord
If You think there’s a way
I can try to repay
All I’ve taken from You
Maybe, Lord
I can show someone else
What I’ve been through myself
On my way back to You —“Why Me,” song by Kris Kristofferson
