The Blessing Week 2 Discussion Questions
Read the following passage:
“A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes. A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.” —Luke 6:43-45
What did this passage just say?
-A good person will produce good from the goodness in their heart.
-A bad person will produce bad from the badness in their heart.
-Our words are the seeds of good or bad and reveal the condition of our heart!
Questions
-If your spiritual health were determined by your tongue (what comes out of your mouth), how are you doing?
-What is the evidence you see from your own mouth that tells you that?
-If our words are evidence of our heart, what might be your heart issue?
(Anger, jealousy, Greed, guilt, insecurity) Hurt people hurt people. Often our relationships are viewed through previous hurts.
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” —1 Samuel 16:7
Questions
-Why would God look beyond the appearance, the outer manifestation, the behavior and look at the heart?
Because that’s where everything on the outside, our behaviors and our words come from. Deal with the heart issue and the other issues take care of themselves.
-Have you ever taken a minute to NOT respond with your mouth to another person before you look at them from God’s perspective?
-Have you tried to see the heart before responding?
-Do you think your responses would be different if you saw the person instead of the behavior?
-Give an example of how doing that may have changed a past experience.
-How could our words speak life to someone’s heart instead of death? How can we bless someone instead of cursing them?
Application
Think of three specific people you are going to apply to this week. Who are they and why?
Commitment
-I will seek first to understand the hearts of others before reacting or responding.
-I will only use my words and actions to build up rather than tear down.
-I will learn what God says about myself and others so I can only speak words of blessing this week over each person I come into contact with.
