What is vanity?

Has God assigned us to a meaninless life?

James 4:13-14
The word often translated as vanity occurs 35 times with differing nuances.
“Under the sun” means life in this world, this present age.
The fashion of this world is ever changing
Living as if godliness is a means to gain in this life is striving after the wind.
