1 John : Chapter 5

“And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
1 John 5:11-12

John’s Main Point = Life is the Son!

“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”
John 5:24

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10

What is Eternal Life?

Eternal Life doesn’t start when we die. Our eternal life starts when we put our faith in Christ in the here and now. We exchange death for life.

John wrote the following passage so that you would have assurance that you have eternal life -

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”
1 John 5:13

When you have eternal life, you exchange the things of death for the things of life.

1) Exchange Hopelessness for Confidence

” This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”
1 John 5:14-15

2) Exchange Bondage for Freedom
“We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them.”
1 John 5:18

We are called to repentance not perfection.

Repentance = Confession + Contrition + Change

3) Exchange Lies for Truth
“We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”
1 John 5:19-20

Those who are unrepentant get stuck in lies. They are blinded from the truth.

Our culture is lost without the truth of God.

Don’t trade it back.
“Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.”
