Giving up control is never easy, but sometimes it may be the only way forward. Ultimately, our efforts to control our future and manipulate our surroundings will eventually fall flat. This week, we’ll be discussing Jacob’s journey with God, his wrestling match with the divine, and the moment where he finally learns that limping through life depending on God is the “good life” he was really created for.
- Icebreaker: Have you ever made a mistake that you would never take back? Why?
- Jacob wanted God to change Esau’s heart, but God wanted to change Jacob’s. What can we learn from God prioritizing Jacob’s heart first?
- Jacob desired God to guarantee him safety from Esau, but instead God promised that he would be with him regardless of what happens in the future. Why was God’s presence greater than a promise of protection?
- After Jacob wrestled with God and received a new name and a blessing, “he walked away with a limp and the sun shined down on him” (Gen. 32:21). This is a beautiful picture of Jacob limping into his future with hope and promise. Why do think it often requires a kind of brokenness before we begin to trust and cling to God?
