God has given us the gift of time.

Ephesians 5.15-17, NIV
15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. (NKJV)

Redeeming the time refers to stewarding our time in a way that glorifies God. Each of us has a limited amount of time on this earth (James 4:14), and we are to use it in ways that honor God (Colossians 3:17).

James 4.13-14
13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

Colossians 3.17
17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

It’s easy to think about our time with God as a moment in a day, that is important, but it goes much deeper than this.

Psalm 139.13-18
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.

When Paul wrote of redeeming the time, the word time is the Greek word* kairos*, which would be better translated as the word opportunity.

This means God will help you recoup, recover, regain, and retrieve lost time and opportunities!

Paul told us that if we’re willing to go the distance to allow God to redeem our time, we can turn things around and end up with a lot of brand new wonderful opportunities that make up for any lost or wasted time in your past.

Colossians 4.2-6
2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

We spend so much of our lives wondering about the would haves and could haves, but God can use us right where we are.

Pray over your schedule and minimize it. Ask God in prayer as you look at your calendar: “How would you like me to use my time to your glory?

Say no. Once you start being more aware of your use of time, you’ll be better able to say no to things that are not in line with how God is calling you personally to use your time, while saying yes to those select things that are most important.

Psalm 90.12
12 Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Imagine our lives if we allowed the Holy Spirit to have all our time.
