Sermon Title: Family Matters
Scripture: Mark 3:31-35 (NIV)

I. Jesus’ idea of church is family.

II. Jesus’ first century world was a strong group society to the core.

III. Family at the time was patrilineal which means your bloodline was determined by your father, not by your marriage

IV. Why was Jesus’ call for his followers to function like family so radical?

V. Jesus does not question the strong group approach to community. He just says you have to make his group your primary group.

VI. For Jesus, to be a child of the father is at the same time to be a brother/sister in the family.

Additional Notes:

Mark 3:31-35 (NIV)
31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”

33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.

34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
