Scripture

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” —Isaiah 6:1-8 (NIV)

4 The Lord is exalted over all the nations,
his glory above the heavens.
5 Who is like the Lord our God,
the One who sits enthroned on high,
6 who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth? —Psalm 113:4-6 (NIV)

Notes

A.W. Tozer - The vague and tenuous hope that God is too kind to punish the godly has become an opiate for millions.

Study Guide

Step One: Icebreaker (Optional)
If you were explaining the nature of God to friends who don’t yet know Him, which one of His
attributes would you be most inclined to tell them about?

Step Two: Open
Ask someone in your group to pray to open your time together. Ask another person to read Isaiah 6:1-8.

Step Three: Discuss

  1. What stood out to you the most in this weekend’s teaching? What was challenging, encouraging, or confusing to you?

  2. What at do you know about the prophet, Isaiah? When did he live and who was he speaking to? What was his general message? Scan through chapter 1 of the book of Isaiah for some context.

  3. Looking at Isaiah 6:5 again, why do you think Isaiah responded the way he did? How does Isaiah’s vision of his Holy God differ from John’s vision of Him in Revelation 4:1-8?

  4. Read Leviticus 16:11-14 to consider the significance of the coal from the altar. What is its purpose?

  5. What do you notice about the progression of Isaiah’s experience of what Kurt outlined as: “looking upward, looking inward, and looking outward?”

  6. How has God used repentance in your personal prayer life to change you or prepare you to serve him better?

  7. What practical ways can you think of that you could remind yourself of God’s holiness daily?

Step Four: Close in Prayer
