What is a word that you hate and why do you hate it?
Discuss
Before watching the After Party you can spend some time discussing the sermon.
- What stood out to you in the sermon? Do you have any questions or observations?
Read Romans 8:26-27:
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Verse 26 says that the Spirit helps us in our weakness. Scott told us that the word for help means “to come alongside and share our burden.” How does the Holy Spirit do that for us? Can you share a specific example?
Verse 26 also says that the Spirit intercedes for us through wordless groans. What does that mean to you? Why is meaningful that the Spirit prays for us? How can that help us when we are suffering?
Verse 27 says that the Spirit prays for us in “in accordance with the will of God.” What does that mean? What if what we want is different than the will of God?

This week’s After Party teaches us how to do the prayer of examen. Feel free to share it with others who would find it helpful.
Prayer of Examen
Guided Group Prayer of Examen
Group leader: read each step below, allowing several minutes for the group to pray silently before moving to the next step. At the end you can pray a closing prayer or simply say “amen.” Additionally, you could have the group share at each step before moving onto the next step.
Let’s begin by centering our thoughts on God. Remember that He is in the room with us. Take a few deep breaths. Let’s sit in silence for a few moments, quieting our hearts and minds.
Take the next few minutes to replay. Think about your day. What were the highs and lows of the day? What brought you joy? What was challenging? Spend time reviewing the day.
Now let’s rejoice. Silently pray a prayer of thanksgiving to God. What are you particularly thankful for today? Then try telling God about everything you can think of that you are grateful for.
Take time now to repent. What separated you from God today? Is there anything that you have to confess to him? Acknowledge and thank Him for His forgiveness.
Finally, resolve. How can you live closer to God tomorrow? Anticipate the new day and ask God to show Himself to you.
