John 19:31-42

19:31-34 | The Jews wanted the bodies removed from the crosses before the Sabbath, so the soldiers broke the men’s legs, making it impossible for them to support their weight and causing them to suffocate. Jesus was already dead, but they spreared His side to confirm it. Perhaps He died earlier than the rest because of the intense scourging He endured, or perhaps because His suffering was so great - He bore the weight of the world’s sins and was separated from His Father.

13:34-36 | Had Jesus been alive when the spear pierced His side, bright, arterial blood would have come out of the wound. The separation of blood from serum is one of the most definitive medical proofs of death.

19:38-39 | Matthew tells us that Joseph was “a rich man from Arimathea” (Matt.27:57). Tradition says Nicodemus was also wealthy. For two people with this kind of prominence, wealth, and power to join together in burying a crucified man meant this “criminal”j had dramatically changed their lives.
