Week 3: ANGER

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32

Uncontrolled anger is:

(Psalm 37:8)
(Proverbs 15:18)
(Proverbs 14:17a)

1.

Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools. Ecclesiastes 7:9

2.

He who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. Proverbs 17:27b

Do not say, “I’ll do to them as they have done to me; I’ll pay them back for what they did.” Proverbs 24:29

3.

(Jesus) “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” Luke 6:27, 28 (See Romans 12:14-21)

For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down. Like charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, so is a contentious man for kindling strife. Proverbs 26:20, 21

Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps… When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 1 Peter 2:21, 23

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. How are you when it comes to getting angry? In the situations below, would you tend to move on quickly, nurse a low-level grudge, or explode in anger?
    • One of my family members neglects a chore
    • Someone at work drops the ball
    • A friend posts something online that aggravates me
    • A public figure does something I detest
  2. In general, when are you most likely to get angry? In what type of situation do you hold onto anger the longest?
  3. Look back over the notes and verses from this weekend. Which point is most applicable to you right now?
  4. Read Romans 12:14-21. Who are you angry with that you need to “bless” and pray for instead? What do you make of the phase “If it is possible”? How could that become an excuse to hold onto anger?
