Building for Tomorrow, Today

How I live today will determine the impact I have on tomorrow.

One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. —Psalm 145:4

We are doing a great work, not for man, but for the LORD God.

Then King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the LORD God.” —1 Chronicles 29:1

David appeals to the community to join him in doing this work for the Lord.

“With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God… Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God… Now, who is willing to consecrate themselves to the LORD today?” —1 Chronicles 29:2-3, 5

And the people respond to David’s challenge by giving willingly.

Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of the king’s work gave willingly. —1 Chronicles 29:6

  • God doesn’t want something from us. He wants something for us.

The people praise God for His grace among them. (2 Corinthians 9:6-8)

The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly to the LORD. —1 Chronicles 29:9

Everything belongs to God, comes from God and is distributed by God.

David praised the LORD in the presence of the whole assembly, saying, “Praise be to you, LORD, the God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. 11 Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. 12 Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. —1 Chronicles 29:10-12

Our one objective should be to honor God with everything.

But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. LORD our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. —1 Chronicles 29:14, 16

God is my source. Jesus is my example.

Discipleship Guide

Let’s Connect

  • Who from a previous generation has made an impact on you? What did they do?

Let’s Talk About It

How you live today will determine the impact you have on tomorrow. King David led the nation of Israel to do something great for God that would impact future generations. And the people responded by giving willingly and wholeheartedly to build a house for the LORD. David viewed everything as belonging to God and coming from Him. Our response should be to honor God with everything He has given us. Together, we have an opportunity to partner with God in building for tomorrow, today.

Psalm 145:4; 1 Chronicles 29:1-16; Acts 2:1; 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

  • Which part of the message made an impact, caught your attention or challenged you?

  • Read Psalm 145:4. How you live today will determine the impact you have tomorrow. What kind of impact do you want to have on future generations? What will this require of you?

  • Read 1 Chronicles 29:1-9. David led the nation of Israel to build something for God that would impact future generations. Why is the posture of your heart so important when serving and sacrificing your time and resources?

  • Read 2 Corinthians 9:6-8. How does knowing that everything belongs to God and comes from God and is distributed by God influence the way you view and use the talents, abilities, opportunities, wealth and honor He’s given to you?

  • Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-12. Does the thought of surrendering wealth and honor to God scare you? Why or why not?

  • Clifton and Pastor Gregg shared about the opportunity we have to purchase The Willows property. Discuss with your group what this will require of each of us as a church and dream about the impact we can make for future generations.
