Phoning It In Group Guide
October 9, 2022

Ice Breaker
SHARE: Think of a time in your life where you missed out or almost missed out on something because you were distracted, made a mistake or were asleep?

(Examples: An important meeting for work or stood someone up….)

DISCUSS: In this week’s Scripture we will look at in a moment, Jesus somewhat startles his hearers with the phrase “Wake up!” Before we get into that, what makes wake up when you are totally asleep?

TRANSITION: Scotty started his message Sunday talking about “phoning it in” or quiet quitting, where a trend in the workforce, school-life, or relationships has been to fade out into mediocrity or stop trying. When have you seen this in your own life or those around you, whether when you were younger or in recent time?

Diving into the Bible

TRANSITION & READ: Scotty’s message focused on the words Jesus gave to the Church of Sardis:
Revelation 3:1-6
DISCUSS: The church of Sardis physically appeared to be in a good spot, with buzz and activity, plenty of resources, and people feeling good. What was the warning or problem Jesus brought up with the Church of Sardis?

EXAMINE: Is there a phrase or idea in Jesus’ words to Sardis that stand out to you or you have questions about?

REFLECT: Twice in the passage the words “wake up” are said. What do you think this looks like for you or our faith community?

CONSIDER: Read as a group John 15:5. What does it look like for a Jesus-follower to be connected to the Vine?

Apply & Pray

RELATE: Is there an area in your walk with Jesus that has slipped into complacency or quiet-quitting…and how can we pray for you?

PRAY: Lord, we hear Your words, “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit.” We do not have enough power or drive to be successful on our own, so we call out for help from You with these situations. Lead us to follow You, step by step, and give us ears to hear and eyes to see Your Spirit.
