Pastor Jeremy Helmuth
January 6-8, 2023
“Making a Difference” (Nehemiah 1:1-11)

DETERMINED to Meet a NEED
Are you aware of the needs around you? Or do you get so focused on your own desires that you miss out on helping someone when they are in trouble or feel disgraced?

You will never

the load of others
until the in your soul .

DETERMINED to PRAY
Nehemiah spent several days praying about a major burden in his life. Before he did anything, he fasted and prayed. We can learn so much from his prayer. He does four things in his prayer that each of us should emulate so that we can see God’s power.

the God of heaven.

your sin to God.

the of God.

your before God.

We hear God’s

when we ,
opening our eyes to see things as they .

Discussion Questions

Getting Started

  1. On a scale of 1 to 10, how aware of the needs of others are you? Do you notice the things around you that need to be improved? Does your heart hurt for when you see someone in trouble? How compassionate are you?

Digging Deeper

  1. Read about “prayer” in the Bible (Mt 6:6-13; 18:19-20; Phil 4:6-7; 1 John 5:14; Mark 11:22-25; James 5:13-18; Luke 5:15-16; Rom 8:26-27; Luke 11:9-13). What did you learn about prayer from these passages?

  2. Study these people and how they noticed a need and took care of it: Ruth (Ruth 1:16-18); Dorcas (Acts 9:36-42); Macedonian Churches (2 Cor 8:1-5); Samaritan (Luke 10:33-35); Barnabas (Acts 4:36-37). Now look around, what is a need around you? Will you meet the need?

Applying the Word to Life

  1. In your prayer time, do you experience the four main components of prayer (Neh 1:5-11), or do you find yourself focused on only bringing your desires before God? Will you commit to praising God, confessing to God, and claiming God’s promises during your prayer time? After a few weeks of praying like this, ask yourself if your prayer time has become deeper and more authentic.

  2. When you pray, do you hear God’s voice in your mind, heart, and soul? Are you patient enough to listen to His still, small voice? Do you need to get rid of distractions when you spend alone time with God?
