This Little Light of Mine
Part of The Great I Am

Sunday AM1.jpg

On Good Friday the darkness set in. It seemed that all hope was lost when Jesus was buried in the tomb. But on Sunday, the Light of the World broke through the darkness of the grave for all to see.

This Sunday, we celebrate the eternal light of Jesus that the death could not extinguish.

What is the darkest darkness you have ever experienced?

“I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” —John 8:12 (NLT)

Many scholars believe that Jesus said this on the last day of the Festival of Tabernacles, where the festivities end with the High Priest praying for the Light of the Messiah to come.

Why would this timing be significant?
What does it mean for Jesus to claim that he is “the light of the world”?

The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. —John 1:4-5 (NLT)

What do you understand about Jesus from this passage?

Jesus’ light helps us see the world the way it is.
It doesn’t take much looking to see all the darkness in the world.

What is some of the darkness you see in the world?

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. —Romans 3:23 (NLT)

Jesus’ light helps us see us the way we are.
The darkness doesn’t just live in the world… all-too-often, darkness lives in me and you.

Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. —Ephesians 2:1-3 (NLT)

Why is it important to remember that we were once in darkness?

I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark. —John 12:46 (NLT)

We don’t have to remain in the darkness. Rather, the light of the world can shine through us.

How will you let Christ’s light shine through you this week?
