Who Is Jesus? | Jesus Brings Division

Pastor Nate San

49“I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! 51Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” Luke 12:49-53

“I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen Him.” (John 14:6–7)

“Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, ‘Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.’ At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, ‘This fellow is blaspheming.’” (Matthew 9:2–3)

  1. We need to make a choice about what to do with Jesus. He is either a liar, a lunatic, or LORD.

  2. Breakage from the things and people we love creates space for God to fulfill us.

46While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” 48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”
49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 12:46–50 (NIV)

What does this mean for me?

  1. Choose to come under His death and resurrection and find new life in Him. He received the punishment of the judgment God has for your rebellion.

  2. What does it look like for you to love those who are close to you yet oppose you?

  3. Be an active part of a spiritual family. You have a unique gift to contribute and you are called to be for those who are different than you. How can you use your gifts to bring others into the family of God?
