Part of Freaking Out!—(And why you don’t have to!)
July 31, 2022

22 And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?

27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! 29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. 30 For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them.

31 Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.” 32 “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Fathers good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” —Luke 12:22-34 ESV

What causes worry in your life?

Believe that God is

22 And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.” —Luke 12:22-23

Discussion question: What keeps you from believing that God is aware of your situation?

Trust in God’s

“Consider the ravens…Consider the lilies…” —Luke 12:24, 27

Trust in God’s

29 “And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. 30 For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. 32 Fear not, little flock, for it is your Fathers good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” —Luke 12:29-32

Trust in God’s

Bottom Line: Let Go and Trust

Freaking Out Series

July 31 Don’t Worry! (Luke 12:22-34)

Start talking. Find a conversation starter for your group. (Choose one)

  • Why do we have a mental block when it’s our turn to order at a restaurant?

  • Have you ever felt out of place because of the way you are dressed? Why?

  • Do you ever worry that you won’t have enough? When do you feel this way?

Start thinking. Ask a question to get your group thinking.

  • Matthew 10:29-31: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid, you are worth more than many sparrows.” Is there a connection between fear and worry? Should we fear that we are not enough or don’t have enough?

  • John 14:1 says “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” When you are facing a struggle, is it as simple as to decide to stop worrying and to trust God? Do we complicate our situation with “you just don’t understand my situation…” arguments? Do we choose to worry?

  • Psalm 94:19: “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.” Does God know our thoughts and emotions? How does God console us when anxiety is great within us? Do you agree with this verse that God can exchange our worries for joy? Can you give us an example?

Start sharing. Choose a question to create openness.

  • In Luke 12:22 Jesus says, “…Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life…” How much of our anxiety is about our life on earth? How much of our worries are about material things rather than spiritual things?

  • Luke 12:32: “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” How would you feel if you gave your child a good life and they spent their time worrying about losing it rather than enjoying it?

  • Luke 12:33 Jesus instructs us to sell our possessions and give to the needy. Next, He says that we are to build wealth that will not fail. Is a worry-free life found when we invest in things of eternal value rather than temporary value?

Start praying. Be bold and pray with power.
