Set Free: From Addiction

Addiction:

  • “the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity”
  • “a strong inclination to do, use, or indulge in something repeatedly”

If you are struggling, in recovery, or know someone who struggles, what is the addiction?

“Drunks and gluttons become poor, and drowsy sleep robs them of wealth.”
Proverbs 23:21

“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,..”
Ephesians 5:17-18

Debauchery:

  • “excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures”

Be Set Free From Addiction

1. Acknowledge you have an addiction.

  • “Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?”
    Romans 6:16

2. Be accountable with yourself, others, and God.

  • Do you have at least one person you can be very real with?

  • At Freshwater, we are a bridge to healing not a wall you need to go through.

  • “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

  • “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.” Galatians 5:16-17

  • You need to get in step with the Spirit.

  • Satan wants you to feel alone in your addictions.
  • God wants you to experience his grace and love through community with other believers.

3. Address your addiction by walking a new path of healing and recovery.

  • “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

  • Walk a new path by…
    • Changing your environment.

    • “But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.” Galatians 6:17-18

    • Addressing all major relationships in your life and decide if they are healthy.

    • Finding new healthy habits.

    • “I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness.” Romans 6:19

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
Galatians 5:1

Don’t let your addictions master you.

Christ has set you free. Claim that freedom. Walk in that freedom.
