INTRODUCTION: On what occasions do you wear black clothing? How does that change your actions and feelings?
Begin the time by praying together.
DISCUSS
1. Judas betrayed Jesus and so did Simon Peter. In what big and small acts do you betray Jesus in your life?
Read John 13:1-5. Imagine knowing that your death was imminent and that those you loved would betray you in your most vulnerable time. How does that frame Jesus’ act of washing the feet of his disciples?
Read John 13:34-35. Think of this new commandment in the context of your upcoming week (school, work, home life, etc.) What is one way you can show love to others despite how you might feel?
In this Holy Week, share ways to help each other keep the practice of communion fresh and meaningful for you throughout the year.
Jesus specifically asked God three times to “let this cup pass from Him” and yet, God did not grant that request. Describe a time when you have prayed that a cup be taken from you.
Share an area of your life where you prefer the darkness to God’s light?
Share acts or practices that help you turn toward God’s light in such times.
PRAY
Adonai, we do not deserve your love. We are creatures of the shadows. Adam and Eve hid from You. You sent an exquisite gift so that we would no longer do so. We are humbled that you consider us worth the expense of your only Son. We want to respond to this overwhelming, never-ending love by living in intimacy with You.
