Foundations (Part 7)
[Genesis 3:8-19 ESV]
And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9 But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”
13 Then the LORD God said to the woman,
“What is this that you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain
you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
GOD ASKS QUESTIONS (Verses 9-14)
Of the man:
[Genesis 3:9 ESV]
… “Where are you?”
[Genesis 3:11 ESV]
… “Who told you that you were naked?…
… Have you eaten of the tree of which
I commanded you not to eat?”
Of the woman:
[Genesis 3:13 ESV]
… “What is this that you have done?”…
WHY does God ask questions?
[Jeremiah 23:24 ESV]
Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD.
Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.
As God questions them knowledge is being gained, not by God but by
.
… “Where are you?”
… “Who told you that you were naked?…
… Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
… “What is this that you have done?”…
What should have come next?
What do they do?
MAN SHIFTS BLAME (Verses 12-13)
[Genesis 3:11-12 ESV]
He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”
Adam blames his wife.
[Genesis 3:12 ESV]
… “The woman… she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”
Is that a factual statement?
[Genesis 3:6 ESV]
… she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
Does it justify Adam?
Why not?
[Genesis 3:6 ESV]
… she also gave some to her husband who was with her…
Who else does he blame for his sin?
[Genesis 3:11-12 ESV]
… “The woman whom you gave to be with me…
[Genesis 2:23 ESV]
… “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”
What does Eve do?
[Genesis 3:13 ESV]
Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Is that a true statement?
[1 Timothy 2:14 ESV]
and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.
Did deception absolve Eve’s responsibility?
Why not?
It’s true that Eve gave Adam the fruit.
It’s true that Eve was deceived.
Yet God still holds them each responsible for their sin.
Original Sin
[Romans 5:12 ESV]
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned–
[Genesis 2:17 ESV]
… for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Biblical Headship
[Romans 8:20-22 ESV]
For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly,
but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.
Did anyone have to teach you to sin?
For all who are not utterly blind, perceive that no part of us is sound; that the mind is smitten with blindness, and infected with innumerable errors; that all the affections of the heart are full of stubbornness and wickedness; that vile lusts, or other diseases equally fatal, reign there; and that all the senses burst forth with many vices, —John Calvin, Comm., 155. Also Institutes 2.1.4–7
This propensity towards sin is because of original sin,
and your affected by it because you are physically born of Adam.
[1 Corinthians 15:22 ESV]
For as in Adam all die…
[Romans 6:23 ESV]
… the wages of sin is death…
Doesn’t God hold each person accountable for their sin?
[Ezekiel 18:20 ESV]
The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
What did YOU do?
GOD PROCLAIMS THE GOSPEL (Verse 15)
[Genesis 3:14 ESV]
The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.
[Genesis 3:15 ESV]
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”
Protoevangelium
The first pronouncement of the Gospel in Scripture and GOD is the One Who delivers it!
Who is this Offspring (Seed) of the woman,
that will bruise (crush) the serpent’s head?
[Galatians 4:4-5 ESV]
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
Satan bruised His heel, a blow that was not fatal.
Jesus Christ bruised Satan’s head, with a fatal, crushing blow.
[Hebrews 2:14 ESV]
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
[1 Corinthians 15:22 ESV]
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
[Romans 5:18-19 ESV]
Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
What you do with the Jesus Christ of the Bible determines who’s offspring you are.
Do you repent of your sin and trust wholly, only in Him?
Or do you reject Him as the only way?
[John 8:42, 44, 47 ESV]
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. …
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. …
47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”
[1 John 3:12 ESV]
We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous.
[1 John 3:7-10 ESV]
Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God,
nor is the one who does not love his brother
Who’s spiritual offspring are you?
What have you done with Jesus Christ?
[John 10:10 ESV]
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy…
[1 Peter 5:8 ESV]
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
[Revelation 12:17 ESV]
Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus…
[Romans 16:20 ESV]
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet…
[1 Corinthians 15:22 ESV]
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
