How Do We Go Forward?
Deuteronomy 20:1-15
Set the stage
Israelites:
• They are just finishing wandering the desert for 40 years.
• Now God says through Moses, time to go enter the promised land.
How about our current world:
• We are just about to complete 2020 and all that it was.
Verse 1:
They gave Moses this account:
We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. —Numbers 13:27-28
Point #1 – Know How To Fight Your Fears and Confusion
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. —Genesis 1:1
Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare. —Psalm 40:5
Verses 2-3:
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching. —Hebrews 10:24-25
Verse 8:
Verse 4:
Point #2 – Focus On The Victories of God
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. —Matthew 6:10
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, —Matthew 28:19
Verse 5-7:
Point #3 – Remember God is so Gracious to Us
Verse 9:
Verses 10-11:
Point #4 – God provides peace, even in war
It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the LORD your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. —Deuteronomy 9:5
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. —2 Thess. 3:16
Verse 12:
We do know how God wants us to go forward:
- Know how to fight your fears – fix your minds on God’s truths
- Focus on victories of God – Make disciples
- Remember God is so gracious to us – don’t do the covid dance
- God brings peace, even in war – internal peace
