Double Dog Dare
But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did. —1 John 2:5-6
1.) Obedience starts with and grows by exposure to Jesus.
One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. —Luke 5:1
He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fisherman had left them and were washing their nets. Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowd from there. —Luke 5:2-3
2.) Obedience is a choice.
3.) Obedience will often require risk and sacrifice.
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.” —Luke 5:4
“Master”, Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. —Luke 5:5a
“Master”, Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” —Luke 5:5
4.) Obedience is not driven by an anticipated outcome.
