“Jesus Friend of Sinners”
Luke 19:1-10
5 Take-Aways
1. Sometimes what is legal is also sinful.
A note from Pastor Josh’s journal:
“For laws that uphold biblical morality and wisdom, I will support. For laws I feel are harmful or violate biblical wisdom, I will work to change within the means given me as a citizen. For laws that are immoral, I will use my influence to speak strongly against. And for laws that would require me to be immoral were I to obey them, I will gladly, respectfully, disobey. I will do so in a reasoned, intelligent, civil way, and I will do so not as an enemy of my government but as a friend to rule of law, not as an act of chaos and disorder but as a responsible citizen charged with refusing to consent to government tyranny and evil.”
2. Jesus is not merely a theological position we adhere to, He is a living Person we can know.
3. Jesus was lied about, gossiped about, slandered…and so will you be if you follow Him.
4. Jesus not only forgives people, He changes them too.
Key Understanding:
Repentance = grace-born restitution, not guilt-driven penance
Repentance = agent of grace, not just recipient of grace
5. Jesus loves rich people and poor people.
Jesus Didn’t Come To…
…help the incompetent
…assist the unfortunate
…empower the despondent
…encourage the self-reliant
Jesus came to seek and save THE LOST.
Discussion Questions:
Getting to Know Me
1. What stuck with you from the sermon?
2. How are you like or unlike Zaccheus?
Into the Bible
1. How could Luke, the careful historian, know the information in v.1-10?
2. What does Luke tell us about Zaccheus?
3. In what ways is Zaccheus acting oddly in these verses? Why would he do that?
4. Think about what the crowd is talking about (see Luke 18:43). How might that affect Zaccheus?
5. What can we learn from the fact that Jesus called Zaccheus by name and invited himself to Zaccheus’ house?
6. Notice the change in the crowd from 18:43 to 19:7. What caused the change? Why did they resent what was happening with Zaccheus?
7. How can you infer that “salvation has come to this house” like Jesus said?
8. How does v.10 fit in Zaccheus’ situation, and how does it fit, now?
Application
- How should we seek to be like Zaccheus?
- How should we seek to be unlike the crowd?
- What was your main takeaway from this week’s worship service? What will you do about it?
- What is one thing God is asking you to do, or one prayer God is calling you to pray, as a result of listening to this sermon?
