
Church membership is everywhere in the New Testament:
In the practice of “gathering.”
Hebrews 10:24-25. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.In the provision of care.
Acts 2:44-45. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.In the presence of accountability.
1 Timothy 5:16. If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those who are truly widows.In the position of leadership.
Hebrews 13:17. Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account.In the process of discipline.
Matthew 18:15-17. “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. Church membership is not:
• A “spiritual connection” with the universal church.
• A formal association with an organization, denomination, or theological orientation.
• Your name on a list.
Church membership is:
• A covenantal commitment to engage with a local church family in pursuing the fullness of life in Christ.
In the church, membership = engagement.
