Title: The Responsibility of Christian Wives

Introduction: What is the duty of Christian wives? What does God’s Word record about the responsibility of Christian wives? Perhaps more than at any other time in history, women today need a clear understanding of how they relate to their husbands. In fact, the significant social changes over the last few decades have led to such confusion that the very idea of “roles” is repugnant to some. They feel that somehow they lose their identity and their freedom if they adhere to some type of “outdated standard.” Many believe that setting up a home with biblical roles promotes male dominance. It is important for us to examine carefully what the Bible records on this subject. While God’s Word doesn’t apply our modern word “role” to marriage, the Scriptures are clear about the unique responsibility God assigned to Christian wives. The responsibility of Christian wives can be properly understood only in the context of loving, servant leadership by her husband.

— Be a helper to your husband. “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’” (Genesis 2:18)
— Respect your husband. “The wife must respect her husband.” (Ephesians 5:33)
— Love your husband. Wives “love their husbands” (Titus 2:4)
— Submit to the leadership of your husband. (Ephesians 5:22-24) (The Raineys, by Barbara Rainey)

“Submission” is the focus of what Paul says in our text for today. Let’s consider three truths on this subject.
