Mormonism - Message Study Questions
Message Summary
Truth is reality, and reality, when tested, always wins. So what you believe is important.
If you deny gravity and jump off the cliff, you will still hit the ground. Spiritual truths are also reality and determine eternal destiny. Mormonism appears Christian on the surface but actually denies the core doctrines of the faith. LDS believe the book of Mormon supersedes the Bible, despite lacking any historical reliability. They believe that God is not eternal, but evolved from a man and that Jesus was a created being through a literal sexual union with Mary, and that he is the brother of Lucifer. Rather than faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, LDS, believe in faith plus baptism plus obedience to church rules. They also believe that men (and only men) can become gods with many wives and their own planet, where they can have endless celestial babies. Therefore, be discerning. Know what you believe so you can explain it to others. Know what you believe so you can correct core false beliefs. And be confident and bold in your faith because Jesus is our rock, so we live for Him daily.
- Any volunteers to explain the gospel (Christian core beliefs) in less than two minutes to the group?
- How do you (or would you) normally react when Mormons or other cults come knocking on your door?
Consider This
Polytheism. Mormons believe Jesus is a God, but only one of many gods. In fact, they say, “As man is, God was, and as God is, man shall be.” Hence they teach that their most worthy male followers can become gods with their own worlds and wives with whom they can naturally propagate children forever.
Consider Satan’s original lie in Genesis 3:5. Why do you think people are still susceptible to the “you can be god” lie?
What was Jesus’ warning in Matthew 24:4-5, 23-27? How do you recognize a false Christ, or what’s commonly called a cult today?
What can you learn about “another gospel” or even “another Jesus” from reading Galatians 1:6-9 and 2 Corinthians 11:2-4? Why do you think the Apostle used such strong language?
Regardless of sincerity, if LDSs teach something profoundly untrue, it is still deception. But read 2 Corinthians 11:13-15. Do you think they would intentionally use deception?
What is the Christian way regarding truth and deception according to 2 Corinthians 4:2? Can Christians use deception? Ever? Why or why not?
Read 2 John 1:7. When the Mormons come knocking on your door, should you let them inside your house? See 2 John 1:7-10. Why or why not? And if not, what should you say to them on the doorstep? (See Ephesians 1:3-14 for further consideration)
Monotheism: Review Deut 6:4-5 (first two of the Ten Commandments) and Isaiah 43:10, 45:5.
- Has there ever been more than one God?
- Will there ever be new Gods?
- How does relying upon the one loving creator God rather than struggling to become one yourself affect the way you live today?
- Has there ever been more than one God?
Moving Forward – Application
Everyone has a need to belong and to be loved. The cults seem to meet those needs by lavishing attention and inclusion on their targets. But what happens to cult love and attention when someone rejects their doctrines? Christians, on the other hand, continue to love their neighbors regardless of whether they become Christians or not.
Who in your sphere of influence is susceptible to cult attention? How can you love them for Christ this week?
Can you share the gospel (explain what you believe) even if it is for practice with someone this week?
Would you consider reading/studying a book that explores the authority of the Bible and why it is historically accurate and trustworthy?
