Day 2: Why We Should Extend Respect (part 1)
In order to extend respect, a vital component of our worldview must be that others have inherent value. From a biblical standpoint that value is derived from the fact that every human being has been made in the image of God. To be created in the likeness of God informs our understanding and purpose of our existence. In a culture that often devalues others, to be created in His image ascribes worth and value to each and every human being! Our worth, our value, our significance is found in the importance God places on us, not in our personalities or skills. For to be created in the image of God means that we not only have the ability, but privilege of relating to and serving God.
What do these verses say about God’s view of humanity and the significance of being made in the image of God?
Genesis 1:26-27
Q: Did God need to create man? Why or why not? What purpose did God have in creating humanity?
Q: When was the commandment “Thou shalt not murder” given? How does this potentially alter how you view the 10 commandments?
Q: Think about being made in the very image of God. What does that tell you about yourself? What does it tell us about others?
Q: How does the image of God inform and motivate one’s reasoning for extending respect?
