Main Idea:
It is finished.
Check-In (Highs & Lows) 15 min
A great, quick way to catch the highlights of what is happening in the lives of the people in your group is to take turns quickly sharing the “highs & lows” of your week. High: What was your biggest highlight since we last met? Low: What was the low point during this time?
Settle-In (Ice-Breaker) 10 min
What’s the biggest debt you’ve ever taken on? Has it ever caused you stress?
Dig-In (Scripture) 35 min
1. Read John 19:28-30. “Tetelestai” is the word that’s translated into “It is finished,” and it was used to talk about a debt being paid. What’s the significance of this word on the cross?
2. How did Jesus’ death atone for our sins? What’s changed because of his death?
3. This passage talks about scripture being fulfilled. What scriptures can you find that were fulfilled by Christ’s life and death? (Try to think of passages you already know, but feel free to use Google.)
4. Read 2 Corinthians 5:19. Why is this good news? (Go beyond churchy answers!)
5. How can sitting under the weight of our sin allow us to appreciate the freedom we’ve found in Christ?
6. How can we feel contrition without letting the enemy turn it into shame?
7. Read Hebrews 10:26-31. What does this passage teach us about the significance of our response to Jesus’ sacrifice?
Gear-Up (Application) 15 min
1. What’s the personal significance for you that Jesus has atoned your sins?
2. How can this be communicated as “good news” to people you know?
Step-Up (Homework)
1. This week we will be walking through devotions for Holy Week. Stake out time each day to watch the devotion and go through the prayer points. This can take anywhere from 10-30 minutes, but whatever you do, don’t rush it.
2. Come for Easter weekend, and let’s celebrate the resurrection as a church family!
