It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise. And so a whole nation came from this one man who was as good as dead—a nation with so many people that, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore, there is no way to count them.

“ Now Sarai was barren; she had no children.” (Gen. 11:30)

“…so she said to Abram, ‘The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her.’ Abram agreed to what Sarai said… He slept with Hagar, and she conceived.” (Gen. 16:2, 4)

“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty, walk before me and be blameless. I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.’” (Gen. 17:1-2)
“God said to Abraham… ‘I will bless her (Sarah) and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.’ Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, ‘Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?’ Then God said, ‘Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac.’” (Gen. 17:15-17, 19)
“Then the Lord said, ‘I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.’So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, ‘After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?’ …Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Gen. 18:10, 12, 14a)
Just as God kept His promises to Abraham and Sarah, He will keep His promises to us!
“Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time He had promised him.” (Gen. 21:1-2)
“…he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 1:6)
“He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.” (Gal. 3:14)
